Autumn: the best time to visit to Hanoi

One of the best times of the year to visit Hanoi, Vietnam is in autumn —  October through to December. The days are warm, with plenty of sunshine and the nights are cool. Rain is rare, and if it does come, it doesn’t hang around for long. Maybe an afternoon, or a few hours in the evening. Hanoi, unlike Saigon…

Vegan Festival Hanoi - Travelling Homebody

First vegan food festival in Hanoi

Going vegan in Vietnam The Vietnamese are a nation of meat-eaters. Pork, beef, chicken, duck and other meats (you don’t want to know) feature in most dishes. Old wives tales and superstitions abound, where it is considered positively unhealthy if you don’t eat meat at every meal. True story! Despite this, younger Vietnamese — and some older folk — are…

Travelling Homebody - Cao Bang - Vietnam - Photo Essay

Cao Bang – Vietnam – Photo Essay

I visited in Cao Bang Province in 2017 and it could have killed me. You can read about the whys and wherefores here. Needless to say, it was pretty scary and a solid reminder that press trips are often not what they’re cracked up to be. And because I couldn’t write a glowing review, I submitted my pictures… which were…

Travelling Homebody hikes the Nakasendo Way in Japan. Its beauty is revealed in this photo essay.

Photo essay: Nakasendo Way, Japan

I travelled to Japan in 2014, for Cherry Blossom. Japan was one of the easiest trips I’ve done… and I thought it would be the hardest because I was travelling completely on my own and I spoke no Japanese. It was easy because the train system was so fabulous, and there were English signs everywhere. The Nakasendo Way was the…

Sarajaveo has a beautiful vibe. See why in Travelling Homebody's photo essay.

Photo essay: Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina

I was in Europe for six weeks in 2012, and more than eight weeks in 2013 (I’ll give you a hot tip: don’t do three back-to-back tours). One of my favourite places (apart from the usual suspects) was Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It’s a city that has seen its fair share of war: it had a starring role in World…

Travelling Homebody explores the night market in Mysore, India.

Photo essay: Mysore, India

Mysore, in the south of India, was one of the friendliest places I visited while I was there. I spent a couple of days exploring the area and it was a fascinating place. Ostentatious wealth juxtaposed against families living on footpaths under tarpaulins. The Night Markets, which feature heavily in this photo essay are wonderful, and should be on the list of things…

See why Santorini is so beautiful with this photo essay by Travelling Homebody's Diane Lee.

Photo essay: Oia, Santorini

Santorini, is one of the most beautiful places on earth. This photo essay of the village of Oia, shot while I was there in 2013, gives you an idea of what it’s like. There is nothing like wandering around the skinny, winding streets and getting lost in alleys. I ended up having a glass of rose in a cafe overlooking…

Atatürk’s Mausoleum, Ankara, Turkey

I’ve been to quite a few mausoleums in my travels. Nothing else quite stacks up against Mustafa Atatürk’s Mausoleum. Set high on the hill overlooking Ankara, it is a magnificent, peaceful space, filled with beautiful architecture. I was quite taken by it. If you would like to purchase this photo, contact me.

Big sky, Gladstone, South Australia

I hate to admit that I don’t travel much in my own country (Australia). I figure there will be plenty of time when I retire. This is one of the rare occasions where I did venture out into my own backyard. I stayed with my sister in Pt Pirie and this view across Gladstone was taken while we were out and about…

Salt lake in Turkey

There were some loooooong driving days in Turkey, which is almost as expansive as my home country, Australia. This huge salt lake was on the way to Cappodocia and was a welcome respite for some leg-stretching. Contact me if you’d like to purchase this photo.
